Sandalwood Carvings — It isn’t just a carving

Sandalwood Carvings

It isn’t just a carving

Karnataka known for its finest sandalwood is also popularly known as Gandhadagudi – the land of Sandalwood. The Gudigars concentrated in Shimoga, Uttara Kannada, Mysuru and Bengaluru districts have carved the scented heartwood of the fragrant Srigandha (Sandalwood) for over a millennium and continue to use the simplest tools to do so: a saw, a plane, a hammer and chisel, or fine-grained hard stone. Inspired by nature and devotion towards the gods, generations of this artisan community have devoted themselves wholly to preserving age-old techniques and crafting this elaborate, incomparable art.
